Robert Is Here and So Are We

If you’re anything like us, you like roadside attractions and fresh farm stands are your jam!  Robert Is Here, near Homestead FL just west of Highway 1, combines them both!

In 1959, 6-year-old Robert Moehling was instructed to sell the family’s excess vegetables and fruit at a stand set up on the corner of W 192nd Street and SW 344th Street, but no one stopped to buy.  Robert’s father thought maybe they just didn’t see little Robert, so the next day, he painted the words “Robert Is Here” in red paint on a hurricane shutter and Robert sold out!  The rest is history.

This very large, open-air market sells basics like oranges, grapefruit, tomatoes, etc., but also some of the best tropical produce you’ll find anywhere, including ugli fruit, dragon fruit, and passion fruit.  They sell plenty of dips, BBQ sauces, salsas, rubs, and salad dressings.  I loved the fact that they’ve given funny names to their jams like toe jam and traffic jam!  Yes, it’s a marketing ploy to get you to buy some and it works.

There is always a line for their famous milkshakes which come in flavors like guanabana and maimey sapote.  They’re a bit expensive, but all natural, highly unusual, and I think Doug would say, “worth it”!

Walk behind the market to see animals – not for eating, but for viewing.  Kids, and kids at heart, will love this menagerie of toucans, parrots, an ostrich, goats, cows, and tortoises.

Don’t bypass Robert Is Here.  It’s a fun roadside stop and one of the best fresh fruit and produce markets we’ve seen.
