We enjoyed the kind of day that reminds you how much there is to discover when you take the time to look. Travel doesn’t always have to mean epic adventures or breathtaking scenery. Mount Washington is the tallest peak in the Northeast United States (6,288 feet) and is often called the “world’s deadliest small mountain” due to its extreme, unpredictable weather and over 160 recorded fatalities since 1849. This is more than Everest! Why? Extreme Weather and Sudden Shifts. Despite its modest height of 6,288 feet, winds have been recorded as high as 231 mph, and sub-zero or freezing temperatures can strike even in the summer. Clear conditions at the base can turn into whiteout snow, violent gales, and hypothermia-inducing storms near the summit in minutes. Part of the Appalachian Trail goes through this area but there’s an easier way to see it. Book a ticket on the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway built in 1869. It’s a slow ride but you do climb an average grade of 25% with sections over 34%. Bring winter clothes any time of year. Brrrr.#mountwashington #cograilway #newhampshire #itstheclimb

And those red and purple colors even more interesting. As the days grow shorter and nights cool down, the veins closing off the leaf trap leftover sugars inside it. When these trapped sugars are exposed to bright sunlight, they undergo a chemical reaction that generates the brilliant red and purple hues. Nature is wild and we get to witness this every year?     A visit to Augusta, Maine’s state capitol, and a n A visit to Augusta, Maine’s state capitol, and a nice walk around this town. Right on the river with a cute downtown we felt like this was one of those towns with great potential. Seemed a little quiet and the state house wasn’t even close to the prettiest or most interesting we e seen, but we did like that their governor’s office had a huge welcome sign for Canadian friends and all the people we ran into were incredibly friendly. This was a travel day on Wednesday between Acadia NP and Augusta, Maine. A couple of notes: 1. This Fort Knox is not where they keep the gold. Who knew there were two? 2.     Everyone goes to Acadia. We enjoyed Schoodic. Scho Everyone goes to Acadia. We enjoyed Schoodic. Schoodic Peninsula is part of Acadia National Park, but it feels a little different. Enjoyed cycling its rugged coastline and this peaceful area. Thanks @missingpersonsrv for the suggestion. This was our last day in Acadia so we stayed at this wonderful little campground in Lamoine State Park and grabbed some Maine lobster while in the area! All hidden gems! Just a little off the beaten path and that’s exactly what we loved about it. Sometimes the best part of a place is the part you have to go looking for. #sceniccycle #intentions #slow
    Once a playground for the rich. Acadia is now a pl Once a playground for the rich. Acadia is now a playground for everyone. Acadia National Park in Maine was shaped in part by wealthy families like the Rockefellers who summered on Mount Desert Island. We loved both the easy trails like Ocean Path, Midrange ones like Bubble Rock, and the harder ones like Beehive and Precipice known for their narrow ledges and iron rungs. Whatever you do you’ll likely see Jordon Pond at some point and you must stop for delicious popover! You’ll probably also see Eagle Lake especially as you’ll want to get out on the carriage roads that run throughout the area. If you plan ahead you can catch sunrise at Cadillac Mountain and enjoy a meal or some shopping in Bar Harbor. We didn’t do either of those this time around. The funny thing about places like Acadia? They may have started as a playground for people with enormous fortunes, but the best parts are now pretty simple: walk, explore, breathe in the ocean air, and notice how lucky you are to be there.     Worked our way down Maine’s US 1 - Eastport, Cutle Worked our way down Maine’s US 1 - Eastport, Cutler, Machias, and Hancock - as we head towards Acadia National Park. These early towns were built to ensure you could walk or ride a horse to Sunday services so between that and the historical fractures in denominations there always seem to be more churches than necessary in Maine. In fact, Maine ranks as one of the least religious states in the country today. Beautiful structures though that anchor the community. #travelday #maine #roadtrip

I have mixed feelings about being back in the states. I’m sad about our division and how it is preventing us from making the great strides I know we are capable of but I’m hopeful that at some point we will recognize all that we have and how much we can accomplish together. We’re blessed with incredible National Parks thanks to government that had the foresight to recognize this and American creativity and ingenuity is beyond reproach. Isolationist policies and individual isolation are bringing us to our knees. We are capable of so much more when we stand together with allies, with friends, with neighbors, with our community and work to raise everyone up. I know we will get there and that it’s just darkest before dawn. Anyway, off my soapbox now. Loved Canada!     Fundy fun days! We’ve spent our last few days in Fundy fun days! We’ve spent our last few days in Nova Scotia along the Bay of Fundy which is known for having the highest tides in the world. When the tide is out, you can walk on the ocean floor but as you can see from the first time lapse it fills up pretty fast! The Bay of Fundy holds 160 billion tons of water which, twice a day, every day, flows in and out of the bay with the tides. That’s the equivalent of all the water in all the rivers in the world. Pretty impressive! 4 years ago we saw a lot more of the Bay of Fundy at places like Hopewell Rocks which we highly recommend but we still enjoyed these areas between Scott’s Bay and Digby as well. We’ve seen some pretty lighthouses, great sunsets, and eaten some fresh seafood along the way. A few more minor stops and we will cross the border. #bayoffundy #funday #lighthouse
