We’ve spent the last two days gunning for Sydney

We’ve spent the last two days gunning for Sydney, Nova Scotia to catch our late night ferry to Newfoundland.
We followed the St. Lawrence River past quaint towns, pretty little churches, and rolling fields with hilltop towns like Kamouraska. We passed by the only town with 2 exclamation marks in its name St-Louis-du-Ha! Ha! We crossed into New Brunswick and ate dinner near the Grand Falls. The roads here sweep up down and around thicker forests but there are also bright blue waters and misty green regions near Perth-Andover and Miramichi. The roadsides are filled with wild purple and pink lupine and white daisies. We crossed into Nova Scotia via Baie Verte and enjoyed the towns with what seemed like made up names and beautiful locations like Pugwash and Tatamagouche before making the final push along the Nova Scotia coast to Sydney and our ferry that departs tonight. #quebec🇨🇦 #newbrunswickcanada #novascotia #roadtrip

If you let it, Québec City will work its magic! Every narrow street in the Old Town winds past centuries of stories, but nothing dominates the city more than Château Frontenac on the hill overlooking the city.
The château takes its name from New France Governor General Louis de Buade de Frontenac, who ruled and protected the colony from the British in the late 1600s.
The British tried again later and the conquest of Québec occurred in 1759 during the Seven Years’ War. Fought just steps from where the Château Frontenac now stands, the battle lasted only about 15 minutes but changed the course of North American history.
The hotel itself opened in 1893, perched dramatically above the St. Lawrence River , and is one of the most photographed hotels in the world. In 1943, Churchill and Roosevelt even gathered here to plan the Allied landings at Normandy.
After climbing flight after flight of stairs we arrived as a wedding was taking place.

Toured old Montreal with MTL Detours yesterday and learned a lot of Canadian history in just 2 hours!
We learned
—How Samuel de Champlain helped establish New France in the early 1600s and how Indigenous peoples were essential to the survival of the first French settlers.
—That the beaver fur trade fueled Montreal’s growth, eventually making it the center of banking, insurance, and commerce in Canada. After the British conquered Quebec City in 1759, Montreal followed, but French language and culture remained strong.
—The 1960s brought major changes during Quebec’s Quiet Revolution. Political and cultural shifts led many English-speaking residents and businesses to leave, changing Montreal’s role in Canada’s economy.
—Today, Montreal is a city where French and English cultures continue to coexist, creating a unique blend of history, language, and identity.
From explorers and fur traders to modern-day Montrealers, every street seems to tell a story. If you’re visiting, don’t skip an @mtldetours walking tour—they brings the city to life in a way a guidebook never could!

It’s impossible to see any of Canada’s big cit

It’s impossible to see any of Canada’s big cities in a day, but we made the most of it. Here’s a taste of Ottawa!
Stop 1: Parliament Hill. Canada’s seat of government since 1859 — 3 huge buildings perched above the river. Nearby, the National War Memorial honors WWI and every war since, with guards standing watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Centennial Flame, lit in 1967 for Canada’s 100th, burns continuously and is ringed by the coats of arms of all 10 provinces and 3 territories.
Stop 2: Rideau Canal Locks. Eight locks dropping to the Ottawa River beside the Fairmont Château Laurier. Built 1826-1832 under Lt. Col. John By as a military supply route after the War of 1812, in case of another American invasion. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We then crossed the Alexandra Bridge into Gatineau, Quebec, to the Canadian Museum of History — one floor on Indigenous peoples of Canada, one of special exhibits (skipped it), and two floors running through centuries of Canadian history. Quick history hits:
— 1613: Champlain paddles up this river hunting a route to Asia. Doesn’t find one, but opens the door to French settlement (New France), the fur trade, and everything that becomes Canada.
— 1763: Seven Years’ War ends, France hands New France to Britain — root of the English/French split that still defines the country.
— 1867: Confederation. Canada becomes Canada.
— 1949: Newfoundland joins — the last province in.
— 1982: Canada finally gets full control of its own constitution. (Self-governance came via the 1931 Statute of Westminster, but the constitution itself still needed British Parliament’s sign-off until then.)
Last stop: Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. A 19th-century Gothic Revival masterpiece with tin-covered steeples — classic French-Canadian style that gleams silver in the sun. Oldest and largest standing church in Ottawa.
5+ miles walked, 350+ years of history skimmed — plus even more if you count everything we learned about Indigenous peoples. Not bad for a partial day!

If you’re dealing with something small be kind and be helpful as the person you interact with may be dealing with a lot more. It takes more planning to see a large city when you’re in an RV., especially one that’s currently hosting FIFA games. We arrived before 7am at Pickering Station outside the city of Toronto to find a parking spot. Then we took the GO metra into Toronto’s Union Station. With only a half a day, we started on the waterfront for sweeping views of Canadas largest metropolis. Then we got a birds-eye view from the CN Tower. We walked northeast to the Hockey Hall of Fame inside a gorgeous old bank building, strolled through a park with a a charming little dog fountain, and then meandered through the cobblestones in the Distillery District. We grabbed a distinctly Toronto lunch - a peameal sandwich - at St. Lawrence Market to close it out. The city has great public transportation, an interesting mix of old and new architectural styles even within the same block, nice green spaces, and a relaxed vibe despite its size. Canada gave us a warm welcome! We crossed the border yesterday and had some nice walks along the beach at Lake Huron from the Pinery Provincial Park. Lake Huron is the second-largest of the Great Lakes and holds about 10% of the world’s fresh surface water but when you’re there it’s easy to forget it’s a lake. On Monday we travelled from a community that never chased the modern world, to a city that got consumed by it and is clawing its way back — Michigan, you gave us a lot to think about!
Started the day in Union, MI, where time seems to move slower and life is intentionally simple. Watched the Amish? Mennonites? go about their morning while we got some fridge maintenance.
Then we rolled through Detroit. Detroit was once the crown jewel of American industry — they built the cars, the tanks, and the soundtrack (Motown!) that defined 20th-century America. At its peak in the 1950s, it was the 4th largest city in the U.S., bursting with jobs, culture, and ambition.
Then came the unraveling. The auto industry collapsed under foreign competition. The 1967 riots scarred the city deeply. White flight gutted the tax base. By 2013, Detroit became the largest U.S. city ever to file for bankruptcy.
But here’s the thing — Detroit is working on a comeback and I wish we’d had the time to do more than just drive through.

We showed up to the Indiana Dunes National Park on

We showed up to the Indiana Dunes National Park on free entry day (rookie mistake) and right after a major storm that closed many of the roads in the park. The rangers said there was only one parking lot we could use for the RV and we had a long day of driving ahead of us to get to our Harvest Host in Union, MI so we squeezed in a 1 mile loop hike. We climbed some stairs, saw some dunes, walked a boardwalk through cool forest, and ended up on a beach with a hazy view of the Chicago skyline. Nice but not exactly life-changing (notice my sarcastic wow face).
But here’s the thing — this park ranks 4th in biodiversity among all U.S. national parks, in only 15,000 acres! You can find arctic bearberry growing next to prickly pear cactus on the same trail. There are carnivorous plants in the bogs. 350+ bird species. It literally inspired the founding of ecology as a science in the 1800s!
We saw absolutely none of that. The honk and a wave we gave this park didn’t do it justice. Next time, Indiana Dunes. Next time. #indianadunesnationalpark #biodiversity #nottoday #rvtravel #visitindiana

Spent the weekend keeping up with the Joneses and

Spent the weekend keeping up with the Joneses and can confirm it’s no easy task.
🥏 Frisbee competition? Doug held his own like the athlete he is. I held my dignity. Barely.
🐕 Dog walking? Twin girls win the day for great walks and the most pet friends to pet a dog at once!
🥎 Watched two girls’ playoff softball games. Catcher knees were tested, outfield throws were made, batters were up and yes, bases were stolen. Lost one but won when it mattered most! GO Vipers!
🐈‍⬛Exploding Kittens board game? I spent the majority of my time exploding or in the sandbox. Neither is winning.
🧺 The one thing I truly excelled at: a spectacular picnic lunch near a historic Zook building, where I sat beautifully and ate magnificently.
Doug nailed the weekend and I was warmly welcomed as the enthusiastic spectator I was born to be. The food was amazing, the family time was all that we hoped for, Bailey had the time of her life, and I have never felt more lovingly outplayed. 😂❤️ #keepingupwiththejoneses #cousins #familytime♥️ #rvtravel

Storm escapers! Wednesday afternoon we avoided being overtaken by 80mph winds in Wisconsin by sheltering in place in the basement of the DeForest library! After the storm blew through we made our way to my college roommate’s home in Brookfield. She and her husband put the good in good friends! They’ve both got demanding jobs, have two teens, a turtle, a snake, a new puppy named Hugo, and they still manage to find time to help their neighbors regularly! We had a short, but great visit and managed to fit in an RV repair. With more rain, lightening, high winds and tornados predicted on our planned route towards Chicago we moved out of the path by camping north of Green Bay Thursday night. We have finally worked our way past Milwaukee and to a suburb of Chicago to see Doug’s cousin by Friday afternoon. #stormyweather #wisconsin #collegebestie #friendsforlife❤️

No photo, no description, and no warning from a friend will prepare you for what’s inside the House on the Rock. The moment you step in, every sense gets hijacked simultaneously — the largest carousel in history with fantastic animals (no horses) spinning under 20,000 lights, mechanical orchestras playing to no one, an entire old timey town, a 3-story-tall whale under stranglehold by a giant octopus, a hallway that seem to stretch into other another dimension, and collection after collection after collection of dolls, fans, armor, etc. It doesn’t just defy expectations; it obliterates the concept entirely and leaves you standing there, mouth open. We left not quite sure what we saw, but very certain that we’ll never see anything like it again. #houseontherock #wisconsin #bizarre #rvtravel

Drifting through what’s known as the Driftless Regions.
Started the morning at Dunning’s Spring and Waterfall in the quaint town of Decorah. Decorah has one of those nearly perfect downtowns—historic buildings, local shops, bike trails, a small airport. and some college town energy thanks to Luther College. If it weren’t so far away from family and for the year round high humidity (65-85% which is a deal breaker), it might make for a great place to retire.
Next stop was the ancient Native American earthworks at Effigy Mounds National Monument, where Native American burial earth mounds were formed in the shape of bears and birds.
Drove over the mighty Mississippi, saw lots of rolling farmland and wrapped up the day just outside of Dodgeville, Wisconsin—the hometown of Lands’ End headquarters.

Today’s travel theme - big sculptures! We started the day exploring the incredible larger-than-life creations at Porter Sculpture Park, where massive metal sculptures rise from the prairie and turn an ordinary stop into an outdoor art adventure. If you’re ever near Montrose SD or a Harvest Host member this is an absolute must!
Then we continued to Blue Earth to see another giant masterpiece—the iconic Jolly Green Giant standing tall over the Minnesota landscape. We crossed into Iowa this evening and have some friends in WI and IL waiting later in the week. It’s been windy, wet, humid and full of bad hair days but otherwise going well. #portersculpturepark #supportartists #hohohogreengiant #badhairdontcare #rvtravel

South Dakota understood the assignment today!
⛰️We walked through Buffalo Gap Grasslands and drove through part of the Badlands (which is one of our favorite national parks).
The day got a little weirder from there…
🦫 We visited the World’s Largest Groundhog because apparently someone looked at a normal groundhog and thought, “Let’s supersize it.”
🚀Stopped at Minuteman Missile National Historic Site and learned just how close history came to becoming a very bad day.
💀🦖Found a skeleton casually walking a dinosaur in Belvidere. As one does.
👻Explored the almost-ghost-town of Okaton, where it felt like the tumbleweeds were the most active residents.
🦌Found “Scrappy” in Kadoka while refueling.
✨ Admired the stunning Dignity of Earth and Sky statue (and another large groundhog in Lewis and Clark display)
🌽Finished at the Corn Palace because no South Dakota day is complete until you’ve admired a building decorated with corn.
Whew! South Dakota: come for the national parks, stay for the giant rodents, skeleton-dinosaur dog walkers, and corn-covered architecture. #RoadsideAmerica #KitschyTravel #southdakota #cornpalace #rvtravel
