From Winslow, AZ to Pine is a pretty drive and quick stop at Tonto Natural Bridge was on the day’s agenda.
At 150 feet wide, 183 feet high, and 400 feet long, it is estimated that the volume of rock is 200 million cubic feet. This geologic wonder arching over Pine Creek is one of the world’s largest travertine bridges. The travertine here is formed by deposition of calcium carbonate in small amounts. A constant flow of mineralized water from a perennial spring supplies the ever-growing bridge. Normally, there’s a short hike to get a look at the bridge from the bottom up, but it was closed when we were there in the spring of 2023.
We had a quick stop overnight in Clear Creek Campground in Camp Verde, which was okay but I wouldn’t stay there again. It was tight pack and pretty run down.
Our drive from there to Anthem was unusually green and the spring super bloom was in progress.
We’d spend the next few weeks relaxing with family and friends in the Phoenix area.
