I don’t do drugs, but I do have a vicious soft peanut brittle (or bruttle, to be precise) habit.
Don’t misunderstand me, I’ve never turned down carrot cake, chocolate or coffee either but with soft peanut brittle so much harder to find, it makes any day with bruttle feel extra special. Bruttle is available at The Alps candy store near Leavenworth, WA. It’s not the only reason to go, but why not take advantage when you’re there?
Hwy 2 is a nice scenic drive through Washington. Just before the main town of Leavenworth make a stop at the The Alps for a great view and bruttle, fudge, pickled stuff, hot sauces, etc.
The main street / highway through Leavenworth transports you to the Alps. The town sits at the base of a gorgeous mountain backdrop and each building in town, including the Starbucks and the Safeway, has a Bavarian façade. Flowering planters and painted pictures of mountain climbers in lederhosen adorn buildings. Businesses include ye old cider house, various gift haus’, a soap shop, hat shops, and one of the largest year round Christmas stores I’ve ever seen.
The mountains surrounding Leavenworth, on the eastern slopes of the north Cascades, are rugged, jagged, and gorgeous as are the streams that carved them. We were just passing through and boondocked just one evening so didn’t take advantage of the hiking, horseback riding, fishing, or kayaking in the area but would love to return and explore this further.
Boondocking Bailey gave our spot along the Icicle River a 3 paws up. It overlooked the river, was flat, bug free in early August, and had good scenery. It didn’t get 4 paws only because it was essentially just a wide pull-off next to the road and we had 4 fairly close neighbors.
