From Cascades To Calm Waters: Exploring More Of Ontario’s Wild Beauty

From the northern shores of Lake Superior, we began to round the corner heading south where we stopped at Aguasabon Falls Community Park, Terrace Bay Beach, and then Pukaskwa National Park.

We could hear the cascading water plunging into the gorge below before we saw it on the short walk to Aguasabon Falls.  Nice viewing platforms provide wonderful views of the falls and rugged cliffs surrounding them.

Not far from here lies Terrace Bay Beach.  The peaceful setting, with its long sandy shore and views of Lake Superior was the perfect spot to soak up some sun.

The highlight was our stay at Pukaskwa National Park.  This boreal forest and rocky shoreline are very pretty so the hikes are great!  What I enjoyed most was taking the pack raft out on the lake.  It was maybe only the 2nd or 3rd time this year that we’ve had the raft out!  There are so many little nooks and crannies in the area that we had a real sense of isolation, but also intimate connection to nature while on the water.  It was just the perfect type of adventure!

Bonus points if you can name a children’s film about a boy who crafts a canoe that travels down the river through Lake Superior and out the Atlantic Ocean.   The answer:  “Paddle the Sea” that has also been credited with bringing attention to pollution of the area that was occurring at the time and has since been cleaned up.

In general, we’ve been enjoying the great lakes area more than we thought we would!
