You know when you drop into Costco and buy a badminton set, quiche for 8, blueberries, and a puffer vest? Well, RV travel can kinda be like that.
Somehow we managed to squeeze in the bizarrely charming and serenely pleasing all in one day trip. Welcome to the Door County peninsula in Wisconsin!
We’ve seen some gimmicks on our travels and often go out of our way for a roadside attraction, but Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant in Sister’s Bay actually delivers on its absurd promise “the restaurant with goats on the roof”.
Fully prepared to be disappointed by some goat statues, we were pleasantly surprised to watch these goats living their best lives atop a lush green rooftop. Is this a tourist trap? Absolutely. Will we judge you for wanting to see it for yourself now that you know it exists? Not even a little bit.
Don’t waste precious time with your server inside this restaurant asking for the millionth time, “But how do the goats get up there?”. There’s a ramp people – mystery solved. Instead, focus on ordering the Swedish pancakes with lingonberries. They’re astonishingly good and frankly, if you’re ordering anything else on your first visit, it’s a rookie mistake. You’re here for the pancakes and the spectacle!
Since this restaurant gets packed faster than you can say “goats on the roof”, show up early or embrace the wait. Maybe take a walk down the block to see some of the other whimsical things store fronts are adding to draw the crowds their direction.

Fat, happy and along for the 40 minute ride south, it wasn’t long before we reached Whitefish Dunes State Park. This park is supposedly known for “the most substantial dunes on the western shore of Lake Michigan“, but really we just enjoyed the pristine beach. We don’t know who gave Wisconsin permission to have beaches this gorgeous, but we were happy they did.

From dining under rooftop goats to white sandy beaches, this was a day for those with travel ADHD or some might say just another Wednesday in the RV.
