Discovered Some Unusual History in Bath North Carolina

Despite its small size, Bath’s history as

  • North Carolina’s first capitol (before it was moved elsewhere in 1722);
  • a city with the oldest church in the state (built 1734);
  • home to the notorious pirate Blackbeard between the time of his royal pardon and his quick return to piracy and subsequent beheading in the same year (read more about Blackbeard here); and
  • the setting for the novel/movie/Broadway musical “Show Boat” which was created by Edna Ferber after she visited James Adams Floating Theater in Bath Creek during the spring of 1925;

provides for an eclectic mix of historical markers around town.

It was a unique day trip!
