A Scenic Lake Erie Adventure

Today we’ll suggest a fun RV travel route between  Dearborn, Michigan and Sandusky, Ohio.

From Dearborn, we drove  I-75 South towards Toledo, viewed as we crossed over the Maumee River.  We then followed OH-2 East along Lake Erie for a scenic drive.

OH-2 passes by the Maghee Marsh Wildlife AreaBy mid-day we’d reached Port Clinton, a quaint lakefront town known as the “Walleye Capital of the World.”

Rather than stop at a restaurant, we grabbed snacks from the RV and headed for Waterworks Park and the Port Clinton Lighthouse, a peaceful lakefront spot scenic with walking paths along Lake Erie.

One of the main reasons we took this route was to visit Heigel Park on Catawba Island (very near Port Clinton).  We found no information that this was a relative of Doug’s but it was fun to check out anyway.  The land for this park filled with sports fields was donated to the area by a wealthy relator named Mr. Heigel.  It’s all we know.

Strangely as we were leaving the area we drove by Miller’s Ferry.  My maiden name, Miller, is very common of course, but the two namesake’s made for a fun stop.

Back on the road we reached our Harvest Host, the Firelands Winery.  it was a fantastic place to unwind with a glass of local wine and listen to live music.

This winery was a stone’s throw from downtown Sandusky.  With limited time, we did not do enough research in this area to know that downtown Sandusky has a wonderful lake  views from Jackson Street Pier, a Merry-Go-Round Museum, and some world famous, Six-Flags-run, roller coasters at Cedar Point.

Although  I now wish we’d done more in Sandusky, this short route offered plenty of scenic stops and got us one step closer to our next stop, Cleveland, Ohio.
