We’ve seen 15 state capitol buildings prior to this one in Helena, Montana. We’d visited this city in August of 2021 but that was prior to us starting to tour state capitol buildings.
This city has an interesting history so I recommend our prior post for more info (link here).
The capitol, itself, is quite pretty and we loved its bold colors, but given the wealth that Helena once had, we were surprised the building wasn’t a bit more opulent. Then again, capitols in Oklahoma City and Harrisburg (which still holds the number one spot) have had refurbishment done more recently. Glad we made the stop in Helena to see it!
Montana’s state motto is “Big Sky Country” and our afternoon drive was filled with all the beauty you’d expect that statement.
We worked our way north from Helena toward Augusta and then boondocked at Willow Creek Reservoir. We had a pretty sunset, tons of space, nice views of the mountains and the water, and even saw a few wildflowers the next morning. It was simply gorgeous!
Really just a travel day that ended up being something special.
