Golden Leaves and Silver Falls in Yooper Country

So many people have the fall colors of Virginia, Maine, or New Hampshire on their travel list, but if you live in the western states, you might consider a shorter trip to Michigan for your fall colors!

We weren’t in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at peak leaf peeper season, but we still got a pretty good fireworks show!  From late September to mid-October expect to see plenty of locals (Yoopers) but also plenty of out of state travelers so plan accordingly.

In fall of 2024, we made a point of checking out the fall colors and some pretty waterfalls between Van Riper State Park and Michigamme Lake.  All of the walks were short, easy, and well-marked, making them perfect for all ages.

As the leaves change, the forest come alive with a kaleidoscope of autumn hues.  In this area we drove and hiked through fiery red and orange maples, golden poplars, green pines and even some trees that display deeper browns and hints of purple.

We found waterfalls at Van Riper State Park before heading to Canyon Falls Roadside Park, the Sturgeon River Gorge, Three Lakes and ending the day near Michigamme Lake.
