Great Smoky Transition to the Blue Ridge Mountains

The Great Smoky Mountains transition almost seamlessly into the Blue Ridge Mountains.  From our perspective, the main difference was placement of the road.  While in the Great Smoky Mountains most of the roads wind through tall, lush green trees with peek-a-boo views of the rivers and surrounding peaks; in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the road climbs up and then winds along the mountain-top ridges.  This allows for great vista views along most of the drive!

During our first day in the Blue Ridge Mountains, we stopped twice – once to hike Waterrock Knob with Bailey and then again in Waynesville, NC before passing through Canton and reaching the Pohatan Campground just outside Asheville, NC.

We then explored Asheville for a couple of days.
