HEIGELS and HUGE TREES

After months of waiting for local and state parks to open due to Covid-19, our adventure began on June 17th.  First stop – celebration in Sonoma, CA with Doug’s Uncle (Roger) and Aunt (Kay).  Later we headed north to Humbolt Redwoods State Park and the “Avenue of the Giants“.  This park is one of a kind…a must see!

We left our house later in the day than we expected and not 10 miles from home, while turning into a gas station, the first of three small plants in the RV became airborne, throwing dirt and plant guts all over the kitchen and living room.  We managed to sweep up enough dirt to resurrect it and continue on our way.

Some friends (Cindy and Leo Grabowski) had sent us a bottle of Dom Perignon when I finished my work with Boston Scientific in mid January.  Since we knew we couldn’t be with them anytime soon, we enjoyed their gift, along with a wonderful meal Aunt Kay had made,  on their outdoor patio.  It was  the perfect start to the trip!

We slept soundly in the RV parked on their curb and enjoyed catching up with them the next day as well.

We drove north into Humbolt Redwood State Park which is home to the Coast Redwoods, the tallest trees in the world!  Many of the redwoods are over 350 feet tall – the height of a 35 story building and the widest redwood is  27 feet across at its base – equivalent to two VW bugs parked bumper to bumper!  Some of the oldest tress are over 2,000 years old. Now, don’t you feel young?

The road that goes through the park is just over 37 miles long and is called the Avenue of the Giants.

Bailey wasn’t allowed to hike with us, which was probably fine as it was fairly warm and she was able to catch up on her beauty sleep in the air-conditioned RV.

We hiked along the creek, which I would normally notice more, but the trees were so incredible on the blanket of ferns that other than it’s pleasant gurgle, I can’t remember much about it.

There are a lot of great trails, but we only hiked the Bull Creek Trail.

If you are anywhere near northern California, go out of your way to see the Humbolt Redwood State Park.  It’s one of a kind!
