So far we’ve spent about 75% of our time boondocking (free dry camping…usually off of forest roads), 5% of our time in RV parks (full electricity, water, and sewer) and about 15% in campgrounds. The other 5% we’ve been trying out a service called Harvest Hosts. These are a network of farms, wineries, and other businesses (e.g. museums) that offer free places for RVers to stay with some hope that you’ll visit their shops. We pay an annual fee to Harvest Host to find these locations. Hidden Acres was a Harvest Host u-pick farm in Mead, Washington.
This u-pick farm was idyllic!
Atop a small hill surrounded by other farms (one with horses in the distance) this farm boasts a cute store filled with jams, simmer sauces, pickled vegetables, etc. We purchased a jam and some fresh salsa. A small children’s play area sits near the store and chickens and ducks wander the grounds. The couple running it were very pleasant and the night we were there, we were the only overnight guest.
Some chips, fresh salsa, a bottle of wine and a winning sunset were followed by a morning of picking. We had the option to pick several types of vegetables, flowers or fruits. Peaches and cherries were in season so we filled several plastic containers with red and black cherries before departing.
As we drove away from the farm we realized that the farm at the bottom of the hill (also a u-pick) was owned by friends of our friends, the Sherves. We stopped in to say hello, but the farm owners were on vacation. Given that they had bodacious raspberries, we couldn’t resist a second pick!
Boondocking Bailey gives Hidden Acres 4 paws up…so check this farm out if you’re a Harvest Host member of if you just want to spend a fun day picking in Mead, WA!
