If you don’t already know, I’m a huge fan of the show “Friends” and every episode makes me laugh out loud at least once. In one of my favorite episodes, Ross Geller is being honored at a dinner and everyone is late in getting ready. Rachel, who hasn’t picked out what to wear yet, brings out an outfit, holds it up, and asks “Does this look like something a paleontologist’s girlfriend would wear?” and Phoebe says “I don’t know. You might be the first one.”
Maybe you have to see the episode in its entirety and know that his profession is an ongoing joke between the friends, but when I think of fossils…I think of Ross and in September, on a tip from Doug’s sister, KC, we had the chance to dig for our own.
That’s right…we completely geeked out with small chisels and hammers as we cracked open shale rocks looking for fossilized grasses, plants, etc. It was fantastic!
If you’re ever near northeastern WA run…don’t walk to the Stonerose Interpretive Center in the town of Republic.
For $15 admission and $5 for a chisel and hammer set, they’ll provide little to no instruction, but figuring it out is half the fun!
Check out our finds below…and YES, you get to keep a certain number of your finds (unless the staff at the Center deem that they’re of significant value or represent a new discovery).

I’m not suggesting that in true Ross Geller fashion I’m planning on multiple divorces or ready to police other people’s grammar, but it was fun to “pivot, Pivot, PIVOT!” (another famous Geller quote) for just one day and play paleontologist. Highly recommended!
