Almost due east of Sisters, OR (post here) is Prineville. The drive from Sisters to Prineville is pretty in a central Oregon ranch land way, and just before you drop into Prineville there’s an overlook called Ochoco Wayside State Park that offers a great view of Prineville below and the Ochoco mountains in the distance.
Continuing east we boondocked for a few days off of Lookout Mountain Road in the Ochoco Forest. The wildflowers in late June were just amazing!
We took Bailey on a hike that meandered through the woods to the Mother Lode Mine, a very well preserved cinnabar mercury mine, which was a quick out and back hike at just over 2.5 miles…her perfect hiking length. Two paws up!
That evening Doug walked the ridgeline to witness an evening thundershower followed by a “top 5” sunset.
The following day we did a 4.8mile hike to Lookout Mountain Summit.
Great hikes, lots of boondocking spots, wonderful wild flowers, and no crowds. Heavenly!
