Rambling Newfoundland’s Trans-CanadA highway

From Gros Morne  (post here) we travelled the Trans-Canada Highway for the next few days towards St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Pilley’s Island and Surrounding Area

Our first stop was Pilley’s Island for an overnight Harvest Host stay at Bumble Bee Bite Inn and Brewery

The food and beer flight was fantastic!  Somehow we managed to eat all of the large, flakey, raspberry, cream filled dessert as well.  A nice flat parking lot overlooked the harbor and made for a perfect stay!

The next morning we’d heard there was a sperm whale museum nearby in Triton

Did you know that the sperm whale…

    • Is the largest predator on the planet with teeth that grow up to 27 cm but food found in their bellies rarely contain teeth marks!
    • Has the largest brain in the animal kingdom
    • Has the largest nose but no sense of smell. Instead, their nose works kind of like organ pipes helping them to make very loud clicks, giving them the most powerful sonar in the natural world.
    • Has sonar that is highly directional and can be twice as loud as an elephant trumpeting and as loud as a 747 taking off! Using this powerful “voice” on their prey (like squid) could possibly confuse or stun them.
    • At 1000 meters below the sea, sperm whale can create a “click” that can travel 100 miles!

There was a small price for admission, but the information inside was interesting, the wi-fi was free, and the overlook was wonderful.

Terra Nova National Park

The clouds had lifted and the rest of our drive to Cannings Cove and the Terra Nova National Park was uneventful.

We camped at Malady Campground and took the Alpaca pack raft out the next day to paddle around Southwest Brook that flows into Southwest Arm.  The banks were lined with plenty of fresh blueberries that Doug couldn’t resist!  Doug also took 3-mile out and back Malady Head sunset hike.

The Terra Nova National Park Visitor Center had a fun display with some live fish, starfish, sea anemone, etc. from the area.

The next day we drove to Blue Mountain for a short walk to a scenic overlook.

Butter Pot Provincial Park

We had one rainy day and evening at the Butter Pot Provincial Park before making the final push to St. John’s

Our driving days were filled with nice scenery.  There were plenty of other cute harbor towns that we could have stopped in, but we had limited time to make our way to St. John’s with the goal of puffin viewing!
