Okefenokee Was Just Okey-Dokey!

The Okefenokee Swamp straddles the Georgia-Florida line.  It is the largest “blackwater” swamp in North America. At the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, we took the 7.2-mile Swamp Island Drive through the park and did not see actually see any blackwater from the swamp!

It’s also said to have Bald Cypress, Swamp Tupelo, Oak, Longleaf Pine, Palmetto  (short palm like plants), hardwood trees, cranes, ibises, egrets, herons, woodpeckers, black bears, turkeys, turtles, snakes and alligators.  We didn’t have time for any of the hikes, but on the drive, we saw  some pine, mushrooms, hardwood trees, Palmettos, some very small alligators at one roadside pond.

To ensure Okefenokee is better than Okey-Dokey, maybe go at a different time of year (we were there in late November 2022) or hike the trails for a better look at the swamp, animals, and trees.
