The Quirky Yukon Landmark That Draws Thousands Of Visitors Every Year

Watson Lake Sign Post Forest is a unique landmark located near Watson Lake.  It began during construction of the Alaska Highway.  A U.S. Army soldier named Carl Lindley, working on the highway, was feeling homesick and decided to post a sign pointing to his hometown of Danville, Illinois, with the distance noted.  Soon, others followed suit and the tradition grew.

Today the Sign Post Forest is a massive collection of over 80,000 signs from all over the world, contributed by visitors, like us, who add their own signs to the forest.

It’s a bit of a drive from Carcross, where’d been the prior day, but we were all still smiling when we arrived so that was good and I don’t think it was just because I’d caught someone in a lake shot during our drive across a bridge standing on the dock buck naked.  Didn’t even notice that until we started to sort through the pictures at a later date!  I’m chalking it up to how thrilled I was that I wasn’t travelling with a dog in a motorcycle side car like two other ladies we saw when we stopped for a break.

We put our logo on our first RV license plate and tacked it up.  Doug took note of the “What three words” that will help us locate it again inside this maze if we ever go back.  (If you’ve never checked out that app it’s pretty cool)
