Shenandoah Falls and Fog

Our first evening in Shenandoah National Park was spent at Loft Mountain Campground.  The next day was partly sunny, so we did a 2-mile hike straight down the hill to Upper and Lower Doyle’s Falls before hiking straight back up.

After both the Smokies and the Blue Ridge Mountains, I don’t want to say we were bored with endless but pretty tree-lined roads and overlooks, but we weren’t entirely dismayed to wake up to rain and dense fog after camping for the night in Big Meadows Campground.  This made for a puckered mountain driving day as we made our way slowly down Skyline Drive  to Matthews Arm Campground.

The next morning was similarly foggy, preventing great views of the Shenandoah area.  It began to clear mid-day as we left the Shenandoah Mountains and arrived at our Harvest Host – Wiffle Tree Farms, near Warrenton VA.  We purchased some delicious grass-fed beef, true free-range chicken and jerky at this host’s store. Bailey  enjoyed sampling some of the fare during dinner that night; what she didn’t enjoy was the electric shock she received when lunging for one of those free-range chickens as we took a walk around the farm.  “We” felt like terrible caretakers as we’d been warned about the fence but, despite a big “yip!” upon contact, she seemed no worse for wear (according to caretaker Doug).  We were the first Harvest Host guests to stay at this pretty farm and it was a nice opportunity to relax and prepare for the busy week we had planned for Washington DC
