Some friendships are rare treasures and this one has weathered time, distance and life’s complexities, emerging stronger and more beautiful than ever. This is my college roommate. In two short years side by side she taught me something invaluable - the importance of being unapologetically yourself! Now she’s married to a wonderful man, has adopted two special needs children, helps her niece, has a dog and juggles her own business that helps seniors who lack close family support. Her husband works with orthopedic clinics and he’s a regular do-gooder in their neighborhood. They are nothing short of amazing! Galena, Illinois has a lot going for it - well preserved 19th century architecture, rich historical significance, a thriving food and wine scene, cute boutiques, and it’s surrounded by natural beauty. Similar to Saint Joseph Missouri’s story this town’s boom and subsequent bust inadvertently preserved much of its charm. It was spared from urban renewal projects but has since been rejuvenated by tourism. The Iowa State Capitol just might be the prettiest state Capitol west of the Mississippi. It’s the only capitol with 5 domes but what really makes it special is the craftsmanship. These detailed geometric patterns on the wall are not wallpaper - these are all hand-painted. This small town, rich in history, was the starting point for the Pony Express, home to Jesse James, and the jumping off point for westward expansion. It’s economic boom lead to “Millionaire’s Row” and its downturn inadvertently preserved much of its architectural heritage by soaring the city from urban renewal projects. In the Land of Lincoln! After a quick visit to the University of Illinois and a free tour of the Indiana State Capitol, the highlight of our day was undoubtedly the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. Unlike the other presidential libraries we’ve been to this museum creates and immersive historical experience! Highly recommend for kids and teens. They used a modern day news program to talk about the election of Lincoln. In addition, political cartoons and headlines of the time along with holographic style movies of characters expressing their different opinions of President Lincoln brought home all that Lincoln was up against and how precarious the country was! A total must-see / must-experience in Springfield Illinois. Clue 1- This state capitol’s glass dome is made of 256 panels of glass. It’s 105 feet from the main floor to the middle of the dome and 72 feet in diameter! The House and Senate chambers have desks that date back to the late-19th century.
Clue 2- From the capitol there’s a huge roundabout containing the Soldiers and Sailors Monument surrounded by fountains?
Clue 3 - The last Denver Broncos Super Bowl was won with a quarterback who also won in this city.

Our planned trip through Columbus and two of Ohio’s most stunning natural areas took an unexpected turn before it even began. The Ohio State Capitol would have to wait for another visit as RV parking in downtown Columbus proved more challenging than we anticipated. Hocking Hills State Park is known for a landscape shaped by glaciers and time. Its deep gorges typically contain 3 main waterfalls but in early September the falls were disappointingly dry! Similarly, Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve was missing the water in the bottom of this narrow gorge. More in todays blog. Move beyond the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and you might be surprised by some of the history, pop culture and natural beauty in the area. With its stunning combination of art, architecture and history, Lake View Cemetery was a hidden gem! The crown jewel of the cemetery is the James A Garfield Memorial. The large memorial reflects the Gilded Ages architectural grandeur and the nations deep morning for Garfield, who was assassinated just months into his presidency. As if this memorial were not enough, maybe the most breathtaking feature in the cemetery is Wade Memorial Chapel which is one of the few buildings designed by Tiffany studios! Completed in 1901 and costing $369K (about $7M today) this small chapel is one of the most expensive and elaborate of its era. The layered glass and elaborate mosaics were stunning. If you’re looking for some pop culture instead, you can visit the house from “A Christmas Story”.
