Sault Ste. Marie is a tale of two cities or at least one divided by a river and the US / Canadian border. “The Soo”, as locals affectionately call it, is a small city destination that straddles St. Mary’s River which is also the border between Michigan and Ontario. Sault Ste. Marie is one of the oldest European settlements in North America, with a history dating back over 350 years. What was once key gathering spot for indigenous peoples and later trappers, became divided after the War of 1812. Today, both cities are linked by the International Bridge, but each retains a unique identity. 2. At that time a local businessman came up with the idea to create a giant goose that could be seen from the highway to draw people in.

Did you know that this large rodent changed the world? The high demand for beaver hats / felt hats during the reign of King Charles I led to near extinction of beavers in Europe by the late 17th century. The demand led to traders exploring the interior of Canada. The Grand Portage, a route around an impassible waterfall along the Pigeon River became a key location for fur trading. This rendezvous point allowed the North West Company to move beaver pelts from the interior to Montreal and then into Europe to meet demand. A visit to Grand Portage National Monument in Minnesota allows visitors to step back in time and learn about trading, felt hat making, and why hatters of the day often went “mad”! “The Niagara of the North” is a bit of an overstatement but Kakabeka Falls is still quite a lovely waterfall and canyon. - Almost 9% of Canada’s total surface area is covered by freshwater, which is about 20% of the world’s fresh water supply.
- Of the 1.42 million lakes around the world with a size of over 0.1 sq. km, Canada is home to 62% of them.
We passed quite a few lakes on our two- day drive in Ontario, including one near the town of Kenora, Long Bow Lake, Blue Lake, and Sandbar Lake. Whiteshell Provincial Park is known for its rugged Canadian Shield landscape, granite cliffs, dense forests, sparkling lakes and rivers, and these petroforms created by indigenous tribes. We knew that pictographs were painted rocks and that petroglyphs were carvings into rocks, but we’d never heard of petroforms which are stone arrangements on the ground. The “waterfalls” in this park were really standing waves or cascades. I don’t think anyone from the western US would call some of these waterfalls, but they were pretty nonetheless.
