Missed Opportunities At Tomoka State Park

We don’t use any of our RV space for storage of holiday decorations of any kind, gifts, or wrapping paper so thank goodness Amazon has a gift-wrap service and we have helpful family and friends who will throw unwrapped gifts into gift bags we send them before delivering them to others.

In mid-December, we spent most of our time in Tomoka State Park, finalizing some holiday gifts.  Life still happens as we travel.  We pay bills, grocery shop, do laundry, work on taxes, and all of life’s other little things.

This park, near Daytona Beach, is supposed to be a birder’s paradise so it would have been great to see in spring or fall as over 160 species have been spotted.

It’s also popular for canoeing, boating, fishing, and there are some trails. Throughout the year they say they have white-tailed deer, gophers, tortoise, bobcats, snakes, racoons, manatees, sometimes dolphins and alligators.

The park was named for the Timucua indigenous people who once lived in this area.   The morning we left, we finally ventured out to at least see the legend of “Chief Tomokie”, which is a 45ft tall statue created by a local artist and erected to much fanfare in 1955. A reflecting pool stood in front of the statue until 1974 and its seen some wear and tear, which is too bad, because its quite and interesting piece of art!
