If you’ve been following us, you know that we’ve been touring as many state capitols as we can. Not only do they have wonderful architecture, but we learn a lot about the state by visiting, not just how it’s governed. We also learn about some of the key industries are and other important historical figures and events that shaped the state.
The Michigan State Capitol stands out among other state capitol buildings in several unique ways.
It has:
- One of the Earliest Cast-Iron Domes. This innovative design was inspired by the U.S. Capitol but adapted for cost efficiency and durability.
- Hand Painted Surfaces. Unlike most capitol buildings, nearly all of the surfaces are hand painted with faux finishes and intricate details. This level of craftsmanship is rarely seen in other state capitols. Some of the painted details mimic carved wood or stone. The murals are abundant and stunning and Victorian-era floral motifs, geometric patterns, and scrollwork can be seen throughout the building. All-in-all there are 9 acres of painted surfaces housed within this building.
- A Victorian High Gothic Style. Many U.S. capitols are done in neoclassical or Greek Revival style, but this capitol style showcases intricate woodwork, colorful murals, and decorative details. It underwent a $58 million restoration in the 1990s, making it one of the best preserved Victorian-era public buildings in the U.S.
- Original Furniture. Many of the rooms, including the governor’s office, still contain the original 19th-century furniture.
- No exterior renovations. The exterior remains virtually unchanged since it’s completion in 1879!
- Cost-effective construction. It was constructed for just 1.5 million – an impressive achievement considering its scale and detailing. Many other capitol buildings of its time were built at significantly higher cost.
From the capitol in Lansing, we made the short trip to Cycling Goat Farm in Howell, MI. This Harvest Host had a great place to park, fun hosts, plenty of goats and even a few chickens.
As usual, this capitol did not disappoint.
