We Break For Brakes

I probably haven’t written enough about the routine maintenance and unexpected maintenance that is required to keep our RV on the road.  I’m so fortunate to have an engineer who doesn’t mind any, and every, hands on project, but there are occasions when it’s faster and easier to have someone else do the work and the sound of wearing brake pads was one of them.

This is why we stopped and spent the afternoon in Big Rapids, Michigan.

This small town of just over 10,000 feels even smaller.  While some might call it peaceful, others would find in downright sleepy.  After dropping of the RV at a local shop we headed for downtown.  While it is quaint, it is also quite limited, with only a handful of shops and cafes that were open on a Wednesday and very little activity inside the ones that were open.

The historic architecture adds some charm, but it didn’t make up for the lack of energy in town.  Some blog posts will tell you that the area is great for outdoor enthusiasts with the Muskegon River and the White Pine Trail State Park nearby, but many others have noted that these both lack standout views or features that make them special.

Given that we were here in early September, maybe the Ferris State University was not yet in full swing?  The students should surely bring some life to town?

Overall, we enjoyed the architecture, the break from the hustle of most of our days on the road, and the town’s painted bulldogs did provide some cute photo ops with the dog, but this stop didn’t leave a lasting impression and the town wouldn’t be one that I’d necessarily return to.
