From Rickett’s Glen State Park, we rolled through Coudersport (which sounds nasty but isn’t), Port Allegany, and into Bradford and one of the best roadside attractions in Pennsylvania – the Zippo / Case Museum & Flagship Store!

The Zippo “windproof” lighter with its famous box case that snaps open and closed was introduced in 1932 with its lifetime warranty.
By 1942, they’d reach 1 million sales mark! They produce seemingly indestructible lighters for WWII beginning in 1943 and when men returned home they raved about their lighters, which spurred Zippo’s sales and advertising tactics. Within 5 years, they’d reached the 10 million mark. By 1969, Zippo had sold 100 million lighters.
Being from CA (where we don’t know a single person who smokes), we were surprised that sales of Zippo were not in decline. They’ve continued to grow worldwide and in 1993, they acquired Case for their high quality, beautifully designed pocket knives and knives. The histories of both companies was told in timeline format. Also included are personal stories from users and movie clips where Zippo played a key role. They say they’ve starred in something like 2,000 films.

The best part about this museum was seeing how many different designs they’ve produced over 90 years – designs specific to wars like Desert Storm, collections related to Disney, Elvis, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Tom Petty, Nascar, Apollo flights, aliens, states, nations, a hunting series, a fishing series, every team in the NFL, NHL, etc, holiday lighters, beer logos, cigarette logs, other company logos, lighters in leather, brass, gold, silver, and jewels, plus many, many more. In fact, if they haven’t already designed it, you can design it yourself. They will make ANY Zippo lighter that you want! Kind of a great gift idea! Link Here
This was not a factory tour (even though they do still produce all Zippos in the town of Bradford) but there was a lot of information provided on the design and manufacturing of the lighter. It was, however, the repair shop for Zippo (which is guaranteed for life) and they had a funny display of some of the lighters that had been sent in over the years. Cocker Spaniel was our favorite!
Yup…we like some obscure state attractions, factory tours and history so this roadside attraction was fire! (pun intended)
